Frequently Asked Questions

Q: I have always used scotchlocks to wire up my towbars without any problem, so why use your kits?

A: The simple ‘scotchlock’ was designed some years ago to suit the old style analogue type vehicle. This type of connections is fast becoming redundant as vehicle technology moves forward. Our wiring kits are tailored to fit each specific vehicle using the original connectors in the car. This gives a 100% perfect fit without the worry of possible contact failure. They also do not give rise to any potential warranty complaints.

Q: My local towbar fitter has never offered me specific electrics, they only fit by-pass relays and surely they would know best?

A: Unfortunately, many so called ‘professional towbar installers’ have very little understanding of vehicle technology and even less knowledge in regard to what is acceptable by the vehicle manufacturer in respect of towing electrics. Sadly, our towing industry has been dogged with little training and virtually zero regulation in who can, and who cannot install towing equipment. It then follows that inferior electrical equipment is installed and the car owner is none the wiser. One of the key questions to think about is: If universal by-pass/scotchlok electrics are acceptable, why is it that there is not one vehicle manufacturer that have ‘universal electric kits’ in their accessory program!

Q: Surely using these specific kits will add more time to the installation?

A: In the majority of cases, the installation time is greatly reduced, but for certain vehicles with more complex operating systems, It may well add more time.

Q: What about the cost? I can spend much less on universal kits.

A: It MAY be likely that the cost of specific kits will be more costly, but there are several factors which must be considered :-

The labour time can be greatly reduced – thus making a saving
Specific kits are recognized by the vehicle manufacturers – which can significantly reduce warranty issues and can be costly to rectify.
Research & development of the vehicle, is applied to every kit. No guesswork as to what to install.

Q: What about multiplexing and Can bussed systems?

A: All our kits have been designed and tested in tandem with the latest technology. In some cases, with direct input from the vehicle manufacturers. Therefore, we are confident that the installation of our kits, creates no problem with the vehicle towing capabilities. In fact, for certain vehicles, the enhanced towing features on the vehicle will function. Learn more on the CANbus Systems page.

Q: I like to have an audible sound when indicating, do your kits have this feature?

A: In some cases, they do. We have designed a number of towing kits which gives a choice of either an audible sound or a visual warning of trailer indicator failure. This applies to wiring kits where the existing flasher unit is replaced or on a few specific designs which require a special module. The use of the standard universal audible buzzer, that is obtained on many website trading outlets, is in fact, seriously flawed as it does not conform to EU law with regard to trailer flasher telltales (see Rear Mounted Buzzers).

Q: How do I order your wiring kits?

A: We are a company who have a policy to use product suppliers located around the UK. Please feel to contact us by phone or e-mail, with your requests. We can then advise you of your nearest supplier. Always be sure to ask them to supply the Right Connections wiring kit as some of our suppliers may offer an alternative part which may not have the level of support you would need.
